A total of three candidates are running for the position of Nepali Congress Province 1 Committee President for the first time. Rajib Koirala, the Parliamentary Party Leader of the Province 1 Assembly, Gururaj Ghimire, the former central President of the Nepal Students Union and current Central Committee Member of the Nepali Congress, and Uddab Thapa, the Immediate Past President of the Nepali Congress Jhapa are the candidates running for the position of vice president.
Koirala and Ghimire are members of Nepali Congress factions that are at odds with one another. Similarly, Thapa is the final candidate from the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction, which includes President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Thapa’s campaign has also received support from Krishna Sitaula, who has endorsed him.
On Thursday, the Nepali Congress will hold its first Provincial Congress, which will be officially inaugurated. The names of the candidates and the names of those who will vote will be made public on Friday. On Saturday, there will be a general election.
Koirala stated that their team is working on finalizing a single candidate as soon as possible. “We are going to have a meeting to put the finishing touches on it,” Koirala said. In addition, he stated that “we will field a single candidate, either myself or Gururaj Ghimire.”
