According to local media reports on Sunday, the Indian Council of Medical Research has developed a testing kit that can detect the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) of the coronavirus in as little as two hours, allowing it to be eradicated.
“This is significant because, at the moment, targeted sequencing takes at least 36 hours and whole-genome sequencing takes at least four to five days to detect the variant,” lead scientist Dr. Biswajyoti Borkakoty was quoted as saying.
According to him, internal validation has demonstrated that the tests are “100 percent accurate.”
The kit has been developed at a time when Omicron cases have been reported in a number of states throughout the country.
On Sunday, India reported three new cases of the Omicron variant, bringing the country’s total number of cases of the new variant to 36 so far. The three cases were reported in the Indian states of Chandigarh, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, respectively.
