In the Maldives, the first Omicron case has been discovered.

In a published Tuesday, local media reported that the Maldives had recorded its first of the variant of the COVID-19 virus.

When the Maldives Protection Agency (HPA) conducted genomic sequencing on samples taken from a tourist from South Africa who arrived in the country on November 27, it confirmed that the Omicron virus had been in the samples.

Following the discovery of the Omicron variant, the Maldivian has prohibited to the Maldives from the following countries: South Africa, Namibia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe.

Upon arrival in the Maldives, Maldivian citizens and permit holders traveling from these countries must submit to tests and be quarantined for 14 days.

According to the most recent figures from the Health Protection Agency, a total of 92,368 active cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the country, with 1,796 of those cases being active. So far, the virus has claimed the of 255 people in the country.

A total of 364,691 people in the Maldives have received two doses of the COVID-19 , with 15,850 people receiving a booster shot. The vaccine has been to a total of 364,691 people.
