They had been subjected to a test upon arrival, and it was discovered that they were infected on November 25 and 26. It was later discovered that they were infected with the Omicron variant of the virus after their swab samples were sequenced later that day, on December 5.
Infected individuals had arrived in Nepal by plane, and the other had come into close contact with them during their time there. Following their positive results, both were placed in quarantine at a local hospital.
The two cases were also the first known occurrences of the omicron variant in Nepal, which was discovered in 2010. The Omicron variant has been designated as a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization.
