Nidhi said in a statement today that he accepted PM Deuba’s request by phone this morning and came to his residence to support him, and that he had decided to support him in the second round of voting for the post.
He has asked all delegates to the General Convention to vote for him in the first round of voting and to vote for Deuba in the second round of voting for the position of chairperson. He expressed his heartfelt appreciation to his comrades who voted for him in yesterday’s election for President of the 14th General Convention, as well as the delegates who voted for him.
Re-voting has begun in the General Convention election after none of the candidates for President received 51 percent of the vote. The two candidates who received the most votes in the first round, Deuba and Shekhar Koirala, are competing in the second round. Voting will begin today at 3:30 p.m.
The Congress constitution requires that more than half of the votes cast for the election be cast. If, for the first time, no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a re-vote will be held between the two candidates who receive the most votes. In a re-election, the candidate with the most votes wins.
Kalyan Gurung, another candidate for the position, has stated that he will support Deuba’s candidacy. Gurung received 22 votes in the first round.
He stated that after discussions with his constituents this morning, he had decided to support Deuba as the party’s chairman in order to foster consensus within the party.
Prakash Man Singh, a presidential candidate, had previously stated his support for Deuba.
